Top Holiday Jobs for 2016

Believe it or not, the holiday season is just around the corner. Though you may not be hearing carols just yet, stores are gearing up for the surge in shoppers and are already hiring part- and full-time employees to help out with the holiday rush. So if you’re looking to make a little money, get ready for the most wonderful time of the year.

Monster highlights that the most common retailers looking for retail employees are:

  • Lowe’s

  • Target

  • The Dollar General

  • Amazon

  • Macy’s

  • Walmart

  • CVS Health

  • Best Buy

  • J.C. Penney

  • Kohl’s

Additionally, Monster states that the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that most retail jobs go to salespersons (27%), cashiers (18%), stock clerks (8%) and retail supervisors (7%). This year, multiple sources state that Kohl’s plans to hire 69,000; Target will employ 70,000; and Macy’s 83,000. Others industries are hiring as well. CNN Money reports that UPS is hiring 95,000 employees this holiday season.

So how can you land a seasonal job?

Start now. If you haven’t noticed already, retailers everywhere are advertising holiday opportunities. Workers typically start in October and work through the new year. These jobs go fast – so it’s important to get your applications in over the next few days.

Apply to multiple places. With all of the opportunities – and the competition – it’s in the best interest of your holiday job search to apply to multiple stores. The best strategy is to fill out an application at some of the bigger retail chains but also smaller stores that may need extra help. At the same time, think outside of the box on this one – or in the case of these next two opportunities, INSIDE the box. Amazon and eBay hire seasonal employees that can either work in a physical distribution location or from home.

Don’t overcommit. As you begin the holiday job search, be realistic about what you can handle between working, homework and studying for final exams. Don’t let one holiday season derail you from the bigger picture: graduating from college and landing your first full-time job.
