Volunteer & Community Service Scholarships

Youth Forward Scholarship

Available to: High School Freshmen through College Seniors

Award Amount: 3 Awards of $1,500

The Youth Forward Scholarship is open to current high school and college students. You must submit an essay of no more than 500 words on your commitment to volunteerism in order to be considered for this award.

Bonner Scholars Award

Available to: Ages 17-18

Award Amount: Varies

The Bonner Scholars Award is available to entering first-year students at participating colleges (a complete list of participating schools is located on the Bonner Foundation Web site).

You must demonstrate high financial need and have an interest in community service and social justice issues to be eligible for this award.

Bonner Scholars will be expected to serve an average of 10 hours of community service each week during the school year and participate in other Bonner Scholars activities.

Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association Scholarship

Available to: Fire and Emergency Service Personnel

Award Amount: Varies

The Florida Fire Chiefs' Association Scholarship is open to fire and emergency services personnel. You must be a current member of the Florida Fire Chiefs' Association, have a rank of fire officer or above, be associated with a 100 percent volunteer fire department or a combination department; population must serve 25,000 or less.

Morton A. Gibson Memorial Scholarship

Available to: Entering College Freshmen

Award Amount: $2,500

Provided by the Jewish Social Service Agency of Metropolitan Washington, the Morton A. Gibson Memorial Scholarship is available to Jewish high school seniors from the Washington metropolitan area.

To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen or be working toward citizenship, be accepted into an accredited four-year undergraduate program on a full-time basis, and demonstrate financial need. You must also demonstrate significant volunteer services within the local Jewish community.

PIRG Fellowship

Award Amount: $24,500

Sponsored by National Association of State Public Interest Research Groups, PIRG Fellowship is available to recent college graduates who are interested in the public interest movement.

As a PIRG Fellow, you will build expertise on global warming, campaign reform, or another social problem.

You will conduct research, make the case for solutions, act as a spokesperson to the media, build diverse coalitions, write grants, and develop the kind of politically powerful support you need to win.

City Year – Volunteer for America

Available to: College Freshmen through Graduate Students, Year 5

City Year, a proud member of AmeriCorps, is a national service organization that brings together young adults from diverse backgrounds for a demanding ten months of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement.

In 20 locations across the United States, these young leaders invest their talents and energy to address our country's most critical needs. City Year corps members engage others in service and make a positive difference in their communities and in the lives of children and youth. Corps members also receive a weekly living stipend and basic health insurance.

Eligibility Requirements: Must be between the ages of 17-24 and a United States citizen or permanent resident alien. High school graduate/G.E.D. recipient OR agreement to pursue a G.E.D. If you do not have a H.S. diploma or its equivalency, you will be required to take a basic academic proficiency test; your position is contingent upon satisfactory testing results.

Citizens’ Environmental Coalition (CEC): Volunteer Internship

Provided by the Citizens’ Environmental Coalition (CEC), the CEC Volunteer Internship is available to students who are interested in environmental issues within a non-profit setting. Internship duties include researching and writing environmental reports, guidance manuals, and fact sheets.

You must demonstrate an interest in pollution and dedication to environmental protection and possess excellent written and oral communication skills to be eligible for this internship.

American Cancer Society: Road To Recovery Internship

Provided by the American Cancer Society, the Road To Recovery Internship is available to full-time students. Interns will collaboratively manage and monitor requests for Road to Recovery services with American Cancer Society Staff partners, and work closely with the volunteer drivers to provide lifesaving transportation assistance to and from cancer-related appointments.

Interns will also work hand-in-hand in assisting ACS with ongoing program assessment, as well as overall volunteer and community management as it relates to the Road to Recovery program.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) General Office Internship is available to students who are at least 18 years old. You must be signed up for PETA's Action Team and have at least one year of work or volunteer experience to qualify for this award.

Additionally, you must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and have a commitment to the objectives of the organization to qualify for this award. A cover letter, resume and three letters of recommendation is required.
