In September of 2014, President Obama announced a new initiative to help combat sexual assault on college campuses. According to President Obama, one in five women are sexually assaulted during their college years, and only 12% of victims actually report the incident. With that, President Obama and his administration are working to end sexual assault – and they’re getting a little help from some notable celebrities like Jon Hamm, Zoe Saldana and Lady Gaga.
In addition to brands like Pandora, Newsweek and MTV, celebrities are stepping forward to support the It’s On Us Campaign, which asks college students to sign a pledge to help prevent and report cases of sexual assault on college campuses. The pledge asks students to take on the issue of sexual assault as a communal problem, not just one that belongs to the victim.
Now, in addition to the campaign, there is a new contest to help spread awareness about the issue as well as get groups on college campuses involved. College a capella groups have been charged with recording a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Til It Happens to You” in a nationwide contest, according to The Huffington Post.
Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the music video for “Til It Happens to You,” told The Huffington Post that "the video can feature the choir or feature other images too -- doesn't just have to be the singers. If somebody wants to work with the dance troupe in their school, or drama group in their school, they can do that." She added that “a very visual performance by an actress can rip your heart out.” Hardwick will judge the entries, along with songwriter Diane Warren, Pentatonix, LL Cool J, Lady Gaga’s mother Catherine Germanotta and music supervisors Bonnie Greenburg and Trudy Green.
The Huffington Post states that the a capella group that wins will receive a Skype session with Pentatonix, a class with Diane Warren and 16-time Grammy winner David Foster and a video chat with Greenburg and Green.
Entries must be received by February 26.
