All of the below scholarships require an essay entry – some as short as only 250 words – with interesting essay topics that range from safe driving and technology to America heroes and animal activism.

Donna Foss Independence Day Essay Scholarship Contest

Available to: High School Freshman through High School Senior

Award Amount: $5,000

The Donna Foss Independence Day Essay Scholarship Contest is available to U.S. citizen high school students.

You must write a 1,500 word minimum essay on the theme "Happy Birthday America" to be eligible for this award.

Award Amount: $2,000

The Bachus & Schanker, LLC Scholarship is available to high school seniors accepted to a college or university and students enrolled at an accredited college or university.

You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and submit a minimum 800-word essay on the following topic:

Available to: College Freshman through College Seniors

Award Amount: $1,500

The Platt Family Scholarship Prize Essay Contest is open to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in an American college or university.

You must write an essay between 1,500 and 5,000 words on the topic, “If Lincoln had lived...” to be eligible for this award.

The "From Failure to Promise" Essay Contest is open to high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate students who hold at least a 2.5 GPA.

Sponsored by the Humane Education Network, the "A Voice for Animals" Contest is open to high school and home schooled students.

To be considered, 14 to 15 year old students must submit an essay which addresses the mistreatment of one animal species, one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one species threatened with extinction; occurring anywhere in the world.

Provided by Pelican Water Systems, the College Scholarship Contest is available to students currently enrolled in a college or university.

Writers of the Future Contest

Deadline: Varies

Available to: College Freshman through Graduate Students, Year 5

Award Amount: $4,000

The Writers of the Future Contest is open to amateur writers.

Your entry must be a new short story or novelette with a science fiction, fantasy, horror or speculative fiction theme, which has not been previously published.

Poetry and children's literature cannot be accepted for this contest.

There are four quarterly deadlines each year (September 30, December 31, March 31 and June 30) with three prizes per quarter of $1000, $750, $500 and a yearly grand prize of $4000 is offered.
