6 Ways to Stay Healthy & Fit in College

College is time consuming and students often find it difficult to manage classes, socializing, and taking care of themselves. Freshmen everywhere worry about the “Freshman 15.”

Taking care of yourself is very important! How can you do everything you do if you do not take care of yourself first?

Staying healthy and fit does not have to be difficult. Many times, it can fit into your busy schedule without extra effort.

1. Walk or bike to class.

This is easy if you do not have a car with you. If you do have a car on campus, it can be tempting to drive and park your car in front of every building you need to be in. However, walking to your classes will help you get your exercise in.

Most college campuses are small enough to have everything within walking distance, even though the campus might be big. Walking or even biking to class saves you the hassle of having to find a parking spot near every building.

Walking around when you have a large gap of time is also a great way to get exercise and use your time wisely. You will learn where things are on your campus that you never knew or saw before. This will also help you destress after a stressful class or day so you can be ready for whatever comes up next!

2. Choose healthy meals.

People who are new to college think it is awesome to be able to eat what you want, when you want. While this is awesome to enjoy for a little, it is not a healthy lifestyle to live all the time. It is fine to binge on junk food every so often, but make sure you eat healthy as well.

See if your dorm allows microwaves and refrigerators so you can make your own meals, which helps you know exactly what you are putting in your food. If these are not allowed and you choose to go to the dining hall, choose a healthy meal option.

3. Take the stairs.

If you only have to go to the second or third floor of a building, take the stairs instead of the elevator, if and when possible. This will help you get your exercise in. Taking the stairs is good cardio. It raises your heart rate and increases strength.

Stair climbing does not require additional time or equipment. It is easy to fit into your daily schedule by taking the stairs instead of an elevator to class. This saves you time since you are not waiting in line for an elevator.

4. Use the gym on campus.

Most colleges have a gym (or several) on campus. It is usually free for students to use. This eliminates the cost of gym membership and the need to purchase your own equipment. You can hit the gym either between classes or after class.
5. Take a health or fitness class.

If the gym is not your scene, colleges offer gym and fitness classes. From yoga to badminton, there is a class for every kind of interest and level. These classes teach you various ways to get in shape, even without going to a gym.

The classes can be fit into your schedule and will give you a chance to work out a couple times a week. If you end up liking an activity you learned in class, you can show your friends and you can do it together!

6. Wash your hands frequently.

Germs are everywhere in college. People touch surfaces such as computers, door knobs, and desks. You never know who touched these surfaces.

While it is not productive to isolate yourself in an effort to protect yourself, washing your hands frequently will help cut back on germs. Wash your hands after using the restroom, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing.

Carry hand sanitizer to use in those situations when you are not in a position to be able to get to a sink. Hand sanitizer comes in different scents, so you do not have to stick with the strong-scented ones.
