For any student, the work and rigors of attending college courses is a challenge on a daily basis. For students challenged with illness, handling these additional obstacles is truly admirable.
Award opportunities for students living with, challenged by or have overcome illness exist to help such students achieve their goals. Such students prove, time and time again, that anyone can accomplish educational goals with the right motivation and determination.
Check out the following scholarships for students challenged by an illness or disability:
ALA Century Scholarship
Deadline: 3/01/16
Available to: Graduate Students, Year 1 through Year 5
Award Amount: $2,500
The ALA Century Scholarship is available to graduate students with disabilities enrolled in or accepted at an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited library and information studies program.
This award will fund services or accommodations not provided by the university that will help enable students to successfully complete the course of study for a master's or doctorate in library science and become library or information studies professionals.
To be considered for this award, you must provide medical documentation of your disability/disabilities, your need for special services and/or accommodations and demonstrate your need for financial assistance.
There are no requirements on semester hours for continuing students. Only U.S. and Canadian citizens are eligible to apply.

Harry Ludwig Memorial Scholarship

Available to: College Freshmen through Graduate Students, Year 5
Award Amount: Varies
Sponsored by the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, the Harry Ludwig Memorial Scholarship is available to visually impaired Oregon residents planning to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate studies.
You must attend an Oregon college or university and document your impairment with a letter from a physician to be eligible for this award.
A 500- to 1500-word essay is required.

Dottie R. Walker LEAD Foundation Scholarship

The Dottie R. Walker LEAD Foundation Scholarship is available to undergraduate students with a documented learning disability or ADHD.
You must be a resident of Colorado and have a minimum GPA of 2.8 to be eligible for this award.

Sponsored by Blind Mice Mart, the Mouse Hole Scholarship is open to visually impaired students and to sighted students with visually impaired parents.

Sponsored by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), the CIEE/MIUSA Access to the World Scholarship is available to students who are living with a disability and planning to study abroad through the Council on International Educational Exchange Program.
You must describe why you want to study abroad and any efforts you have made in advocating on disability issues or how you will use this opportunity to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities to be eligible for this award.
You must also be a U.S. citizen.

James "Rhio" O'Connor Memorial Scholarship Fund

Sponsored by Cancer Monthly, LLC, the James "Rhio" O'Connor Memorial Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students at colleges/universities in the United States.
To be considered, you must submit an essay on the use of alternative medical approaches in the treatment of cancer.
Some suggested topics for your essay are: Why are alternative therapies used by cancer patients when they are not FDA approved? Should cancer patients and doctors be able to use whatever treatments they like in treating cancer? Should medicinal medicine and folk knowledge have any relevancy in cancer?
It is estimated that it costs over $400 million to bring a new cancer drug to market. Does that establish roadblocks for the testing and approval of alternative therapies?

The Chairscholars Foundation Florida Scholarship is open to seriously disabled students attending public schools in the Florida counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Volusia, Sarasota, and Polk.
You must have at least a "C" average and be eligible for your school's free or reduced lunch program to be considered for this award.
