While you prepare for your college search and admissions processes, it’s important to plan ahead, keeping standardized test deadlines in mind.
These apply to both the SAT and ACT so, whichever test you decide to take, make sure you plan out both your registration date and a study schedule leading up to your testing day.
Be mindful that you want to give enough time to prepare for the exam and, perhaps even, utilize a test prep course or practice exams.
Exam Planning for High School Juniors:
If you’re a junior in high school, it’s worthwhile to take both exams during your spring semester. Most students perform differently on each exam and many perform better on one test than the other.
Plus, keep in mind that the newly designed SAT will be available to take this semester (spring 2016). It’s wise for students to take the SAT in addition to the ACT, even if you only planned to take the ACT.
It’s important to note: juniors that take standardized tests in the spring of 2016 will be at an advantage to those that don’t. Why? If you take your standardized tests in the spring, you will have the advantage of having experienced the exams.
With exam experience under your belt, you will have the entire summer between your junior and senior year of high school to continue to study, prepare and work to improve weak points before retaking the exams in the fall of your senior year.
Exam Planning for High School Seniors:
If you’re going to be taking the exam as a senior in high school, try to take either the SAT or ACT as early as possible during your fall semester. Doing so will allow enough time to retake the exam in December or January if you decide you’d like to try to improve your score.
Also, taking the exam before any of your admission applications are due will help ensure that colleges receive your test scores sooner rather than later. This can affect the timing of when you receive your admissions decision. If you decide to take (or retake) the test later in the year, be sure to let the colleges you’re applying to know which testing date you decided on.
Here’s a list of testing dates for each exam over the next year, 2016-2017, to help you plan ahead.
SAT Test Dates:
• January 23, 2016 – Register by December 28, 2016
• March 5, 2016 – Register by February 5, 2016
• May 7, 2016 – Register by April 8, 2016
• June 4, 2016 – Register by May 5, 2016

ACT Test Dates:
• February 6, 2016 – Register by January 8, 2016
• April 9, 2016 – Register by March 4, 2016
• June 11, 2016 – Register by May 6, 2016

• October 22, 2016 – Registration deadlines will be announced in March 2016
• December 10, 2016 – Registration deadlines will be announced in March 2016
• February 11, 2017 – Registration deadlines will be announced in March 2016
• April 8, 2017 – Registration deadlines will be announced in March 2016
• June 10, 2017 – Registration deadlines will be announced in March 2016
