Colleges for Animal Lovers

When August and September roll around, it’s just as difficult to say goodbye to your furry friends as it is Mom and Dad. Unfortunately, the majority of college campuses don’t permit students to house pets in on-campus housing, but some colleges across the country are breaking the mold and merging pet life with student life.

After all, pets are known to make people happier and healthier, and who better to reap the advantages of that kind of relationship than overworked, financially struggling students? Check out the 10 colleges that are not just limiting their pet policies to fish, but instead, opening dorms to domestic animals of all kinds.

1. Eckerd College – St. Petersburg, Florida

Eckerd College is one of the first schools to embrace pets as part of better student life quality. They allow domestic animals of all kind as long as the animal can be caged. Pets and their owners are restricted to living in certain residence halls and are not allowed to stay on campus during the summer.

2. Stephen’s College – Columbia, Missouri

Stephen’s College doesn’t just allow pets; it also has a fostering program with a local shelter for students who want the companionship of a furry friend for a few days or weeks without the full-time commitment. Students are charged with keeping these pets safe and well cared for until they’re ready for their forever homes.

3. Washington and Jefferson College – Washington, Pennsylvania

Though all students on campus are welcome to bring non-carnivorous fish with them to college, only students living in the Pet House, or Monroe Hall living unit, are permitted to bring domestic pets, like cats and dogs.

4. Principia College – Elsah, Illinois

Much of Principia College’s is pet-friendly, making it easy to find a place for you and your pooch to hunker down during the school year.

5. California Institute of Technology – Pasadena, California

No dogs allowed! Seriously. Caltech is a cat-loving institution – so cat-loving, in fact, that a whopping seven residence halls welcome furry felines. Each living unit is allowed a maximum of two cats, meaning your roommate can bring one too!

6. University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, Illinois

Technically, University of Illinois allows pets, but they keep things pretty restricted. As of now, there is only one on-campus living unit that allows pets. Nonetheless, it is still a very pet-friendly campus, offering classes to the community on how to best care for your pet.

7. Canton State University of New York (SUNY) – Canton, New York

Canton SUNY has a pet wing that houses students with small animals as well as those who may not have pet but love being around animals. Unfortunately, dogs, birds and snakes are not allowed, which limits the list of domesticated animals that students can bring to campus.

8. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Cambridge, Massachusetts

Like Caltech, MIT only allows cats in designated dorms. In order to get your cat on campus, you not only need the approval of dormcon, MIT's student government body that represents all undergraduate dormitory residents, but your college roommate as well.

9. Stetson University – DeLand, Florida

Stetson University allows fish, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats, mice, cats and dogs. Also, Stetson goes a long way to make your furry friend feel just as at home on campus as you do. They have a dedicated dog park for students’ dogs to socialize with one another.

When it comes to Sweet Briar’s pet policy, they have only one restriction: only horses are permitted. Sweet Briar has a riding program that offers a strong instructional program and participation in American hunter, jumper and equitation riding competitions.
