Karlie Kloss: supermodel, Taylor Swift’s BFF and coder extraordinaire.
Wait – what?
Yes – what you probably didn’t know about Karlie Kloss is that she knows how to code apps, websites and software. Last year, she took a coding course with the Flatiron School in New York City, and it made such a lasting impact on the supermodel that she decided to give 20 other young women the opportunity to do the same this summer through the Kode with Karlie Scholarship.
Karlie states that, “…It’s crucial that young women learn to code as early as possible to ensure that we have a voice and a stake in what the world looks like.”
Approximately 20 scholarships are available – 10 in New York City and 10 in other locations around the country. Other locations include Austin, Boston, Chicago, Greenwich (CT), Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Applicants do not have to live in any of the designated cities to apply. While the scholarship covers tuition for the two-week Introduction to Software Engineering Course, it does not cover the cost of travel or housing.
By the end of the course, students will know how to successfully build an app using languages and tools that adults use in the courses that help them start new careers with business and organizations like The New York Times, Kickstarter and Etsy.
To apply to the scholarship, applicants must complete and submit a 60-second video telling Karlie why they want to learn how to code and how they’ll use their coding knowledge in the future. The application deadline is May 1, 2015, and winners will be announced on May 10.
