Alcohol Awareness Month: 4 Facts You Need to Know

April marks an entire month devoted to Alcohol Awareness, and though drinking under the age of 21 is technically illegal, it doesn’t mean alcohol use isn’t happening on college campuses. In fact, most students try alcohol for the first time in their lives during college. But students, more than anyone, need to be aware of the risks of alcohol use, especially when they may not know their limits or how alcohol can cause them to react.

With that, let’s explore some of the top four facts that you should know about for Alcohol Awareness Month.

1. Four or five drinks is binge drinking.

According to USA Today College, the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) states that binge drinking is four drinks in one sitting for a woman and five for a man. It can also lead to blackouts or passing out. Furthermore, the CDC defines heavy drinking for women as eight drinks or more per week and 15 or more for men.

2. Nearly 1,700 college students die from alcohol-related injuries or circumstances.

The NCADD (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) reports these deaths occur in individuals between the ages of 18 – 24. An additional 600,000 students suffer from alcohol-related injuries each year as well.

3. Students are at higher risk for sexual assault when drinking.

Again, according to the NCADD, about 100,000 students each year are victims of sexual assault or date rape while under the influence of alcohol.

4. College males are drinking more than college females.

The 2013 Monitoring the Future Study (MTF) reports that 43% of males reported drinking five or more drinks in a single setting in the past week, while only 30% of females said the same. It also stated that 23% of males claimed to having consumed 10 drinks in a row as to 7% of females claiming so.

The NCADD states that 66.4% of college students admit to drinking in the past month, and the USA Today College article references a CORE study that reports 70% of students say that alcohol helps them “break the ice” in social situations. With that, students need to understand and take measures against the risks that can arise when drinking on a college campus.

Make sure that when you socialize, you stick with your friends. Don’t drink out of a community cooler or from a cup that someone hands you; pour your own drinks. Also, drink plenty of water, and limit your drinks during one sitting so that you’re not binge drinking. Finally, don't drink and drive; and remember, buzzed driving is drunk driving.

Essentially, make choices in college that make your best interests and health a priority. Keep these facts in mind and educate others to spread the word about alcohol awareness this month.
