No – it’s not a joke or a game. Cards Against Humanity has launched a new full-ride scholarship for women in STEM fields called the Science Ambassador Scholarship. Open to women in undergraduate studies, the ideal candidate will act as an ambassador for their field, according to the Science Ambassador Scholarship’s website.
A press release from Cards Against Humanity states that the scholarship is funded by the sales of their Cards Against Humanity “Science Pack.” The scholarship fund has grown to over $500,000 with the sale of this expansion pack, and the brains behind the Science Pack, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal’s Zach Weinersmith and Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait, plan to provide four years’ tuition to the scholarship winner.
Cards Against Humanity Community Director, Jenn Bane, stated in the press release that, “We created this scholarship because we want to put a spotlight on women who are passionate about science. It’s so important that young girls know they have a future in any field they want to explore, especially math and science, which are historically male-dominated fields. We felt like we could make a huge impact in this area by funding a woman’s education, and helping her become an ambassador for her field.”
To apply, students must submit a public, three-minute video to YouTube explaining a scientific topic, and they are specific to point out that they’re not looking for a personal statement. Going over the three-minute mark will get your scholarship application immediately disqualified, so beware of that. The judges also note that production quality is not a factor. Rather, they’re looking for passion, excitement and enthusiasm on a STEM topic.
Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen or resident as well as a student enrolled full-time during the 2016 – 2017 academic year in a STEM field. The deadline for all video applications is December 1, 2015. Finalists will be contacted in early 2016, wherein additional materials or supplements may be requested by the panel of judges.
