Preparing for Your Job Interview

Job season has begun! The holiday months are often filled with scattered “Now Hiring” signs especially at retail stores. The winter months are often filled with fantastic bargains and shopping trips so lots of businesses hire at this time of year.

Even though there may not be a sign that the business is hiring, it never hurts to give a resume or ask if they have any job applications. And remember, there’s no rule saying you can only apply to one job - give your resume to multiple businesses!

Once you have given your resume or completed a job app, feel free to go back to the store a few weeks later and check in with the manager. This lets them know that you are still interested and that you take the time to make sure they received your job application.

So, what happens if you are called and asked to come in for an interview?

Here are a few tips to prepare for an upcoming job interview:

1. Look Professional

When going in for a job interview, you want to look prepared and professional, even if you’re applying to a job that you may think is super casual.

Being put together shows the interviewer that you are respectful and that you will most likely follow an established dress code if required. This means it’s unacceptable to walk into an interview right after you’ve gone to the gym and have sweat dripping down your face.

2. Be on Time

Getting places on time is something we’re taught our whole lives: getting to class on time, picking people up on time, cancelling in advance, etc.

Make sure you get to the interview on time or even a few minutes early. This sets an example for yourself; if you end up being hired, people know you will be on time.

3. Remain Calm and Collected

Keep eye contact with the interviewer; don’t stare at your lap or the table when responding to questions. A confident applicant is what most hiring managers want to find!

4. Arrive Prepared

Be prepared to answer questions about your availability, your personality and your skill set. Bring a copy of your resume and a list of references. It may even be helpful to type up your availability beforehand, in case the hiring manager asks about your schedule.

Most importantly, be yourself and be honest. When it comes down to it, that’s what businesses are looking for.
