There are plenty of scholarships for writers available to students, whether the interest is in journalism, stories or writing of any other type.

But, such scholarship aren't just limited to students with studies related to writing. They are also available to students who are able to communicate effectively through the written word. A true writer - a great writer - can write about absolutely anything. Even a "boring" scholarship essay is a challenge that a writer can take on to express oneself.

Available to: College Freshmen through College Seniors

Award Amount: $1,000

The Financially Fit in Your 40s Essay Contest is open to undergraduate students. You must submit an essay of between five and ten pages on how one can achieve financial success by his or her 40s in order to be considered for this award.

Gene Roddenberry Memorial/Sir Patrick Stewart Scholarship for Aspiring Writers and Artists

Available to: College Freshmen through Graduate Students, Year 5

Award Amount: $1,000

Provided by Starfleet Academy, the Gene Roddenberry Memorial/Sir Patrick Stewart Scholarship for Aspiring Writers and Artists is available to students pursuing studies in acting, dance, music, writing, literature, graphic arts and other media related fields.

Applicants must be members in good standing with STARFLEET and must have been so, for at least one (1) year before the application deadline.

You, Me and Poetry Scholarship Slam

Available to: College Freshmen through Graduate Student, Year 5

Award Amount: $1,000

April is National Poetry Month -- the largest literary celebration in the world! -- and we want you to help us celebrate. Share with us your unique poetry experience. Writing unites us all, but we have different reasons for why it is important to us. What do poetry and being a poet mean to you? Why did you decide to become a poet? How did poetry enter your life in the first place? Maybe there was a specific poem that struck you, or you just found a connection with your pen and paper (or keyboard) and couldn't stop writing. Tell us in a poem your personal poetry story for your chance to win.

John A. Lent Scholarship in Comics Studies


Deadline: Varies

Available to: College Junior through Graduate Student, Year 5

Award Amount: $500

The John A. Lent Scholarship in Comics Studies is open to current students who have authored, or is in the process of authoring, a substantial research-based writing about comics.

Preference is given to master theses and doctoral dissertations, but all students of comics are encouraged to apply.

A self-contained excerpt of the project, cover letter, resume, and letter of reference are required.

William S. Maulsby Memorial Scholarship

Available to: College Freshmen through College Seniors

Award Amount: Varies

The William S. Maulsby Memorial Scholarship is available to students at the University of Iowa, School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

You must demonstrate financial need, have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and plan to teach high school journalism to be eligible for this award.

MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest

Available to: College Freshmen through College Seniors

Award Amount: $3,000

Sponsored by the Marine Corps Gazette, the MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest is open to all Marines on active duty and to members of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve.

The contest honors the essay that proposes and argues for a new and better way of "doing business" in the Marine Corps.

James “Rhio” O’Connor Memorial Scholarship Fund

Available to: College Freshmen through Graduate Students, Year 5

Award Amount: 5 Awards from $100-$5,000

The James "Rhio" O'Connor Memorial Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students at colleges / universities in the United States.

To be considered, you must submit an essay on the use of alternative medical approaches in the treatment of cancer.
Some suggested topics for your essay are:

• Why are alternative therapies used by cancer patients when they are not FDA approved?

• Should cancer patients and doctors be able to use whatever treatments they like in treating cancer?

• Should medicinal medicine and folk knowledge have any relevancy in cancer?

• It is estimated that it costs over $400 million to bring a new cancer drug to market.

  Does that establish roadblocks for the testing and approval of alternative therapies?
