If you’re a skilled writer, a few hundred (or even a thousand) words is no biggie.

Students that can easily express themselves through writing flock toward scholarships with interesting essays and the scholarships on this list are just that.

All of the below scholarships require an essay entry – some as short as only 250 words – with interesting essay topics that range from safe driving and technology to America heroes and animal activism.

Annual Signet Classic Scholarship Essay Contest


Deadline: 4/14/16

Available to: Ages 16-18 Years

Award Amount: $1,000

The Annual Signet Classic Scholarship Essay Contest is open to high school juniors and seniors.

This year's essay competition is based on the book, "Little Women".

You must write an essay on one of five selected topics listed on the Web site to be considered for this award.

All I Need Scholarship Slam


Deadline: 4/15/16

Available to: Ages 13-25
Award Amount: $1,000

We all know this familiar question: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what's the one thing you would take with you? You might be quick to answer with your favorite book or an empty journal to fill with all the new existential thoughts you'd have while on an island by yourself.

Well, we want to take this challenge a step further. What is the one thing you can't live without? Is it a person, an object, or even an idea that you hold close to your heart?

Tell us in a poem about the importance of the one thing you feel you absolutely need and why, for your chance to win $1,000 for college.

Fountainhead Essay Contest


Deadline: 4/29/16

Available to: Ages 16-18

Award Amount: $10,000

The Fountainhead Essay Contest is open worldwide to 11th and 12th graders. You must write an essay of no fewer than 800 and no more than 1,600 words on a topic relating to Ayn Rand's novel, "The Fountainhead."

Topics can be found on the sponsor's Web site. Essays are judged on both style and content.

The winning essay must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of "The Fountainhead."

Book Marketing Scholarship


Deadline: 4/30/16

Available to: High School Freshmen through Graduate Students, Year 5

Award Amount: $1,000

The Book Marketing Scholarship is available to high school and college students.

To be considered, you must submit a maximum 1500-word essay on persuasive writing.

Online Games Scholarship


Deadline: 5/31/16

Available to: High School Seniors through College Seniors

Award Amount: $2,500

The Online Games Scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors and currently enrolled university students. You must submit an essay of at least 500 words on the topic "Can a video game elicit an emotional response? What makes a game affect you on an emotional level?"

MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest


Deadline: Varies

Available to: College Freshmen through College Seniors

Award Amount: $3,000

Sponsored by the Marine Corps Gazette, the MajGen Harold W. Chase Prize Essay Contest is open to all Marines on active duty and to members of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve.

The contest honors the essay that proposes and argues for a new and better way of "doing business" in the Marine Corps.
