Back to school. It’s more than a phrase, it’s a time of year, particularly for retailers.
According to the National Retail Foundation, “Back to School” shopping is second only to Christmas, with 30 percent of families increasing their budget this year.
In 2014, the average family spent about $680 on back to school shopping for both middle and high school students. That’s a lot of dough for parents to shell out – which is probably why retailers compete to feature their biggest “Back to School” sales and promotions.
Large and small retailers, alike, work to feature the best and brightest products to get your “Back to School” cash.
So, what’s the coolest stuff for the best prices at these hot savings spots? That’s where you should take your business.
These top big brands’ back to school (or whatever they’re calling them) promotions this year will allow you to set-up your semester with style.
Amazon: Prime Day
This year, Amazon is launching its very first "Prime Day" on July 15. The company says that they’ll be featuring more deals than Black Friday for prime members.
According to the site, “Prime Day is a one-day shopping event on July 15, 2015, with more deals than Black Friday. Prime members can shop exclusive deals from electronics, toys, video games, movies, clothing, patio, lawn and garden, sports and outdoor items and more.”
Apparently, it’s in celebration of Amazon’s 20th anniversary but their timing is impeccable to reap in those back to school purchases.
Not a Prime member? Don’t worry – they have you covered. They’re offering a free, 30-day membership to anyone so you – and everyone else - can shop to your heart’s content on Prime Day. (Amazon Prime is normally $99 per year and includes free shipping on Prime items.)
And, other big brands want in on the action. Competitions, likely in response to Amazon’s “Prime Day,” are featuring bigger sales than ever this year.
While we won’t see all of the deals on items until “Prime Day,” we found some neat items for students with early price cuts.

Walmart, has “Back to School” items front and center on their web site, along with “Rollback” promotions, with a design that is all-too reminiscent of Black Friday, with bold, red, black and white graphics.
Their marketing strategy isn’t exactly subtle, either. Taglines like “Low Prices everyday for everyone. No sales. No gimmicks. No membership fees,” has us wondering whom they’re referring to? Just kidding. It’s pretty clear.

Kohl’s has more of a traditional approach, with a “Back to School 2015” section that’s pretty much what you’d expect.
